Abstract

This research deals with the study of the semantic development that occurred in the civilizational words for titles among in the travel books of Abdul Ghani Al-Nabulsi, He monitored the semantic changes of words by tracing the stages of development of the word and its meaning, relying on three basic dictionaries: Taj al-Arus by al-Zubaidi, al-Qamus al-Muhit by al-Fayruzabadi, and Muhit al-Muhit by al-Bustani, It is one of the most important dictionaries that dealt with that era, and these dictionaries mentioned the original words, It also monitored foreign words, and noted the use of meaning and the change in the meaning of words in terms of decline, advancement and transition, The research followed the descriptive approach and also made use of the historical approach by tracing the semantic development of the word, The research consists of an introduction and two sections. The first section constitutes the theoretical aspect and studies semantic development, its factors and manifestations, Then comes the second section, which is the practical section, and studies the words of social titles semantically, and these words are: (Effendi - Khawaja - Sir - Noble - Summary, Descendant, Master, Noble, Generous, Owner), We find that some words have maintained their meaning as titles, others have specialized their meaning, some have declined or advanced in meaning, or there has been a shift in meaning, and some foreign or Arabized words have emerged.
