The study aimed to assess the reality of the organizational work environment and its dimensions (organizational structure, administrative leadership, organizational culture, and administrative systems) in Syrian universities. This was achieved by conducting a comparative analysis of these dimensions from the perspective of faculty members at Tishreen University and Al-Sham Private University.
The research adopted a descriptive approach. The study population included all faculty members at both universities, while the sample was a convenience sample of 175 faculty members (150 from Tishreen University and 25 from Al-Sham Private University). A questionnaire was distributed to them, and 148 usable responses were returned, with 129 from Tishreen University and 19 from Al-Sham Private University, resulting in a response rate of 84.57%.
The results revealed both strengths and weaknesses in the organizational work environment at both universities. Faculty members gave a positive evaluation of the organizational structure regarding cooperation and clear responsibilities, and of the organizational culture concerning a sense of belonging and shared values. They also positively assessed the administrative leadership's performance in terms of mutual respect and encouragement. However, key challenges emerged, including bureaucracy, a lack of participation in decision-making, and a failure to seriously consider their suggestions. The results also indicated that administrative systems, especially those related to salaries and incentives, were a major weakness in both institutions. No statistically significant differences were found between the universities in the evaluation of most dimensions except for administrative systems, which were significantly better at Al-Sham Private University due to its greater financial and administrative independence. This confirms the impact of this factor on the work environment.
