Abstract

 

This study analyzes the relationship between school and environmental characteristics and academic achievement among high school students in Tartus Governorate, Syria, using canonical correlation analysis. Data were collected from 150 students in the academic years 2023-2024. Independent variables included school size, hours of sleep, family monthly income, 9th-grade exam score, and the number of classrooms. Dependent variables comprised students' academic scores in general and in the first and second secondary grades. Data were analyzed using SPSS27. Normality of the variables was confirmed before applying canonical correlation analysis. Results revealed a strong negative relationship between family income and academic achievement, and a strong positive relationship between the number of classrooms and achievement. The effects of school size, hours of sleep, and 9th-grade exam score were negligible. The study recommends implementing financial support programs for low-income students, increasing the number of classrooms in overcrowded schools.
