Abstract

The research aims to highlight the need to reactivate the cultural heritage tourism trails that were established by the Syrian Ministry of Tourism and were suspended after 2011 due to the outbreak of war in Syria. This is due to their role in stimulating domestic tourism and achieving local development after the end of the war and the start of the reconstruction phase. It also highlights the need to support the tourism sector, reform service facilities, and diversify tourism products to achieve a competitive advantage for the Syrian tourism sector. The research uses the historical approach to provide a simplified historical overview of some tourism trails with a historical dimension, such as the Path of the Prophet Abraham (the Syrian Cultural Trail) and the Levantine Hajj Trail. The research also relies on the inductive approach to extrapolate the extent to which tourism trails can stimulate domestic tourism and achieve local development by presenting information and facts about Syrian tourism trails, the challenges facing their reactivation, and the challenges facing heritage tourism. It also highlights the opportunities available to develop solutions and proposals that may contribute to planning a new national vision to promote Syrian cultural heritage. The research reached several conclusions, the most important of which was that cultural heritage tourism trails possess a tourist attraction that makes them competitive with neighboring countries. The research also concluded that new trails should be designed based on the rural environment with its cultural and natural components, and that local residents should be integrated into the design of these trails. The research also concluded that promotional plans for tourism trails and for cultural and natural heritage should be developed within the context of a new and comprehensive national vision.
