Abstract

Given that Cyperus rotundus is one of the most dangerous agricultural weeds for crops and is widely spread in the Syrian coastal plain, the aim of this study was to evaluate its anti-diabetic biological efficacy, by assessing the ability of C. rotundus aqueous extract to inhibit the activity of the enzyme α-amylase.

The extract was incubated at different concentrations with the substrate solution and the enzyme, and the inhibitory activity was measured spectrophotometrically. Acarbose was used as a standard inhibitor (positive control), and GC-MS analysis was performed to qualitatively and quantitatively identify the bioactive components in the extract.

The results of this study indicate that the aqueous extract of Cyperus rotundus contains many biologically active components. GC-MS analysis of the extract showed that it contains phenolic acids, stibilins, flavonols, flavonoids, and alkaloids, which have many biological activities. The extract also showed good amylase inhibitory activities (IC 50 value was 165.47 µg/mL) when compared with acarbose (IC 50 value was 124.47 µg/mL), indicating the possibility of using the aqueous extract of Cyperus as an effective plant amylase inhibitor.
