Abstract

This study explores the close relationship between grammar and rhetoric in the Arabic linguistic tradition, demonstrating how the grammatical system enhances and enriches rhetorical meanings. It proceeds from the assumption that grammar is not merely a set of formal rules governing word endings, but rather an active semantic tool that contributes to the production and orientation of meaning. The research adopts a descriptive–analytical approach in examining grammatical phenomena with rhetorical impact—such as fronting and delaying, ellipsis and explicit mention, definiteness and indefiniteness—supported by examples from the Qur’an and classical Arabic poetry. The study concludes that grammar and rhetoric constitute an integrated unit, and that ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī’s theory of nazm represents the most complete embodiment of this integration.
