This paper explores the roles of character in Hassan Saqr’s short stories, focusing on four major dimensions: the complementary element, the surrogate speaker, the event-reactive figure, and the event-driving agent. The analysis shows how characters may function as secondary elements that enrich dramatic depth, as voices narrating events from alternative perspectives, as figures reflecting psychological resonance, or as central agents actively shaping the narrative. The study highlights how these roles illuminate the dynamics of contemporary Arabic storytelling and address a research gap in classifying character functions in Saqr’s works. By examining the interplay between character roles, narrative structure, and storytelling techniques, the research underscores their contribution to artistic significance and the human dimension of the text. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and informed by previous narrative criticism, the study offers a systematic critical reading of character roles in Saqr’s narratives.
