Abstract

   This research, entitled “Stylistics: Its Concept, Origins, Development, and Most Important Pioneers and Schools,” aims to identify the meanings of the word “stylistics” as a modern critical term, and to trace the stages of its development from its inception to the present time, And clarifying the group of opinions about its concept, and their differences between one critic and another, according to the critical school to which he belongs, According to the focus he takes on one element of literary discourse over another.   The research begins by clarifying the difference between the terms style and stylistics, and the relationships of intertwining and harmony between them as well, and explaining the historical origin of the emergence of the latter term (stylistics), and the historical precedence of the first term (style), then touching on mentioning the most important pioneers of stylistics from Arabs and Westerners. With the aim of encompassing all the perspectives that define stylistics, clarifying its characteristics and features, and defining its boundaries, in preparation for discussing stylistic trends, fields, and schools. Stylistics, as a method of approaching and understanding literary texts, occupies a high position among modern critical schools.   All of this was done by following the descriptive approach, which works to refute the phenomenon under study and reveal its secrets, with the help of the historical approach, which arranges the phenomenon under study within its correct chronological context.
