This study aimed to identify suitable sites for water harvesting in the Baniyas River Basin by small dams, using spatial modeling methods provided by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies through analyzing and processing primary and secondary data for the study area and determining a set of conditions and standards required for water harvesting by earthen small dams.
The study relied on the (SCS-CN) method to determine the flow characteristics, which is one of the most appropriate methods used to estimate the volume of surface runoff and evaluate the possibility of establishing water harvesting systems. This method showed that most of the basin area is within the high (CN) categories, meaning that it generates high surface runoff, making it a suitable area for water harvesting projects. It was also found that the degree of suitability decreases towards the west where population centers and accompanying roads and infrastructure are concentrated.
Three suitable sites were identified for establishing small dams on the Baniyas River Basin course within the central and eastern parts of the basin that are characterized by a slight slope of less than (5 degrees), as it was found that these sites are optimal according to the selected criteria.
