Abstract

This study addresses the application of politeness theory in analyzing the theatrical discourse of )Saadallah Wannous(, through an examination of his play )Munamnamat Tarikhiyya (as a model that embodies the relationship between language and power within a tense social and political context. The research draws on the theoretical framework of politeness strategies as formulated by Lakoff, Leech, and Brown & Levinson, applying them to the text to uncover the mechanisms of communication between characters, and their manifestation of positive politeness, negative politeness, direct, and indirect strategies. The analysis seeks to demonstrate that politeness in the play transcends its linguistic dimension to reach a dramatic level, revealing structures of oppression, complicity, and resistance. It highlights how language becomes a critical tool confronting authoritarian discourse and reshaping collective consciousness. The study also aims to show how )Wannous( employs theatrical language as a form of cultural resistance, combining aesthetic and political dimensions simultaneously.
