ألفاظُ الأقمشة والملابس الفارسية في معجمِ محيط المحيط للبُستانيّ_ دراسةٌ مُعجميّةٌ
Keywords:
fabrics, clothing, Arabization, linguistic changeAbstract
This study examines Persian terms related to fabrics and clothing as found in Muḥīṭ al-Muḥīṭ, the dictionary compiled by Buṭrus al-Bustānī. The research involves collecting these terms from the dictionary and comparing them with entries in several later Arabic linguistic dictionaries in order to identify words not mentioned in those sources. It also aims to trace the linguistic changes these terms underwent across four linguistic levels: phonological, morphological, syntactic, and semantic.
At the phonological level, the study tracks the substitution of Persian sounds that have no equivalents in Arabic with suitable Arabic counterparts as the terms were integrated into Arabic dictionaries. The morphological level involves analyzing the words into phonetic segments and examining how well they conform to Arabic morphological patterns. The syntactic level addresses compound words prior to their Arabization—those which were coined into single lexical units. Finally, at the semantic level, the study explores changes in meaning as these words transitioned from Persian into Arabic, in accordance with well-known principles of semantic change such as narrowing, broadening, or semantic shift.
