Abstract

The study aimed to identify the difficulties of linguistic communication in a sample of children with autism spectrum disorder from the point of view of special education specialists, according to the variables of severity of the disorder and chronological age. The study included in its sample (28) children distributed according to the severity of the disorder and according to age, and they were chosen from the Syrian Organization for People with Disabilities -Amal in the city of Damascus. The researcher applied the "Linguistic Communication Difficulties in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders" scale. The results indicated the presence of difficulties in linguistic communication distributed across all dimensions, with (expression, naming, visual communication, attention, motor imitation, and oral imitation) receiving an average score, while the comprehension and discrimination dimensions and the speaking dimensions received a weak rating.

The results of the first hypothesis indicated the presence of statistically significant differences between the averages of children with an “average” rating and the averages of children with a “severe” rating for language communication difficulties on the total score and sub-dimensions, with the exception of the “understanding and discrimination” dimension, in favor of children with a “severe” rating. The results of the second hypothesis also indicated the presence of statistically significant differences between the average ratings of children aged (5-6) years and the average ratings of children aged (7-11) years for linguistic communication difficulties on the total score and sub-dimensions, with the exception of the dimensions of “attention - visual communication - understanding and discrimination - naming” in favor of the rating of the special education specialist for autistic children aged 7-11 years.
