Abstract

This presented research aims to explore the symbolic significance of the image of the dove in the poetry of Nusayb Ibn Rabah , the Umayyad-era poet and freed slave, so, the poetic image serves as the special space where the poet's mind weaves its thoughts and visions a vehicle through which he crafts a unique poetic language, imbued with charm and gracefulness.

In Nusayb's verse, the image of the dove carries a lot of emotional and intellectual resonances. As a figure rooted in nature and in the poetic tradition of depicting animals, the dove has long held a central place in classical Arabic poetry throughout the ages. Yet, in Nusayb's work, this image transcends conventional literary usage. It becomes a mirror of his personal experience, a means to articulate his elevated emotions and subtle sentiments, and a way through which he reveals his longing and passion for the beloved. The psychological dimension often entwined with the dove's plaintive cooing that serves as a sincere expression of the poet's sorrow and suffering. This emotional tone echoes the traditional association of the dove with mourning, a symbolism believed to have originated from the bird's eternal lament for its lost mate since the time of Noah [peace be upon him].

Although considerable attention has been given to Nusayb Ibn Rabah and his distinctive position within Umayyad society, no reading has found among all these studies to deal with the image of the dove in his poetry. Therefore, this research seeks to fill the gap, relying on a descriptive methodology for both analysis and interpretation
