Abstract

ABSTRACT□

The aim of the research was to identify the reasons for the poor academic achievement in the Arabic language subject among fourth-grade students in basic education from the teachers’ point of view, and to study the differences between the average responses of teachers to the reasons for the poor academic achievement in the Arabic language subject among fourth-grade students according to the variables (years of experience, academic qualification).

The research relied on the descriptive approach, and the research community consisted of all fourth-grade teachers of basic education in the first-cycle schools in the city of Tartous, numbering (70) male and female teachers, according to the statistics of the Statistics and Planning Department in the Tartous Education Directorate for the academic year 2023-2024. Due to the small size of the research community, the researcher adopted the comprehensive enumeration method, where a questionnaire prepared by the researcher was distributed, the validity and reliability of which was verified, to (60) male and female teachers after excluding (10) teachers due to their inclusion within the exploratory sample, and (56) complete questionnaires were retrieved and valid for statistical analysis purposes.

The research reached the following results: The reasons for poor academic achievement in Arabic language among fourth grade students from the teachers' point of view were arranged in descending order as follows: (Reasons related to the school in first place, followed by reasons related to the curriculum, followed by reasons related to the family, followed by reasons related to the teacher, and finally reasons related to the student). There were no statistically significant differences at a significance level of (0.05) between the averages of teachers' responses to the reasons for poor academic achievement in Arabic language among fourth grade students according to the variables of years of experience and academic qualification.
