Abstract

This research aims to study the distribution of basic education services in the city of Latakia and analyze their alignment with the impact of rapid population growth that the city has witnessed in recent years. This growth has increased pressure on educational services, leading to exacerbated issues of classroom overcrowding and a shortage of schools in some neighborhoods. The research adopted a descriptive-analytical methodology, relying on the collection of statistical and field data, along with the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze the spatial distribution of schools and assess the efficiency of educational services.

The results revealed that the current distribution of schools in Latakia is unbalanced, with educational services concentrated in the city center and older neighborhoods, while peripheral areas, particularly the eastern and northern regions, suffer from a lack of schools. The study also identified significant overcrowding in classrooms, with some classes exceeding 60 students, negatively affecting the quality of education and increasing the difficulty of the teaching process. Additionally, there is an urgent need to establish new schools in areas experiencing rapid population growth.

The research proposes rehabilitating existing schools to comply with planning standards and ensuring flexibility in the design of new schools to allow for future expansion. It also emphasizes the importance of improving educational planning by providing accurate statistical data and distributing schools equitably in line with population density in each neighborhood, with a focus on areas lacking educational services.
