Sufism, Badawi al-Jabal , Omar KhayyamAbstract
Sufism is a social, religious, and literary phenomenon deeply rooted in both the collective consciousness and the literary heritage of post-Islamic eras. It emerged as a reaction to people’s growing preoccupation with worldly matters, seeking instead detachment from material life, purification of the heart, and elevation of the soul in pursuit of the ultimate truth.
Omar Khayyam is considered one of the most controversial poets regarding his association with Sufism. His poetry is infused with ideas, symbols, and wisdom that elevated him above his contemporaries. Likewise, Badawi al-Jabal stands as one of the most prominent modern poets—distinguished by his knowledge, refined culture, and spiritual yearning to grasp the truth and transcend the burdens of reality.
This study aims to explore the points of similarity and difference between Khayyam’s mysticism and that of Badawi al-Jabal. It undertakes a comparative approach to understand how the Sufi experience evolved across two distinct eras, to identify the unique characteristics of Sufism in each poet’s work, and to trace the spiritual and poetic affinities that bring them together.
