Abstract

Cervical Cancer is one of the most significant health challenges facing women globally. The Papanicolaou (Pap) smear is an effective tool for the early detection of abnormal cellular changes, which contributes to reducing mortality rates and treatment burdens. This study aims to identify the barriers preventing Syrian women from undergoing the screening and to propose appropriate solutions. The study was conducted on a convenience sample of 100 women visiting Al-Hussein Health Center in Tartous. The results showed that while most participants had heard of the test, a significant proportion were unaware of its primary purpose. Medical staff were the primary source of information; however, actual screening practice was low and often performed only once. The most prominent barriers identified were a lack of perceived need, knowledge deficits, fear of pain, and embarrassment. Conversely, the presence of female doctors and clear explanations from medical staff were the most significant motivators. The study recommends enhancing health awareness and providing a supportive environment to encourage women to undergo regular screening.
