The performance of head nurses plays a significant role in the successful operation of hospitals. Therefore, it is essential to develop the managerial competencies of them and evaluate their performance accordingly. Most studies have emphasized the importance of managerial competencies and have developed training programs to develop them. It was found that competency-based training, evaluation, and development of staff is one of the most important strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of these staff in providing the care they need. This study aimed to assess the effect of managerial training program for head nurses on their managerial competencies. The researcher used the quasi-experimental approach (pre-, post-, follow-up). This research was conducted in Lattakia University Hospital and Jableh National Hospital in Lattakia Governorate. The study sample included all head nurses present during the morning shift in the mentioned hospitals, their total number was (49) head nurses. Data were collected using a two-part managerial competency assessment questionnaire: 1) Demographic data of the head nurse 2) managerial competency assessment questionnaire developed by the researcher, which the sample used to self-assess their managerial competencies (before starting the training program, immediately after its completion, and then after 3 months). The results showed that there were statistically significant differences in the average of the six main managerial competencies between the pre-, post-, and follow-up assessments (p=0.000) during the three comparisons, with an effect of the training program reaching 97%. The most important recommendations are to provide a supportive climate and environment for training and professional development, and to involve head nurses in developing and designing training programs.
