Abstract

The aim of this research was to develop an informational guide on nursing care errors and the legal aspects associated with them in the hospital. The research was conducted at Lattakia University Hospital in the city of Lattakia. The research sample consisted of (466) individuals. The current research included four tools: demographic data, a form to identify nursing errors and their causes, a form to assess knowledge of the laws and legal aspects related to nursing errors, and a form to evaluate the guide in terms of content, comprehensiveness of legal aspects, and applicability. The research concluded that medication errors, delegation errors, patient falls, and failure to explain procedures to the patient commonly occur. Nurses sometimes exhibit malpractice, negligence, documentation errors, and hospital infections, while failure to maintain privacy, failure to ensure the integrity of equipment, and failure to obtain patient consent are rare. The results also indicated that nearly three-quarters of nurses were familiar with the laws and legal responsibilities associated with all their work, and their level of knowledge was good. More than half of the nurses were familiar with the Medical Professions Practice Law and the rules of labor law. The results also showed that, in the view of more than half of the nurses, the Professional Practice Law, the Penal Code, the Constitution, and the Civil Code are fair laws. Nearly half of the nurses also believed that the labor law is fair. More than two-thirds of the nurses indicated that the aforementioned laws are clear, comprehensive, and enforceable. They also specify penalties for each nursing error and fairly guarantee the rights of the nurse and the patient. The guide also provides essential information in a clear manner. The nurses recommended that their colleagues read the guide, circulate it to all hospitals in the Syrian Arab Republic, and adopt the guide by the Nursing and Health Professions Syndicate.
