Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem that has a serious impact on the functional status and quality of life of patients undergoing hemodialysis. This study aimed to identify the physical concerns of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on dialysis. This study followed the descriptive cross-sectional approach, and included an available sample of 50 patients of both sexes. Data were collected at Homs University Hospital, using a questionnaire developed by the researcher to determine the physical concerns of end-stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. The results showed that the largest percentage of the sample (46%) was between (35-45) years old, and that all study patients had previous hospital admissions with medical histories such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney stones. The majority of patients in the study sample were concerned with symptoms resulting from end-stage renal failure (such as itchy skin, fatigue, headache, and swelling of the extremities), in addition to low blood pressure during dialysis, sleep disturbances, and adherence to a diet and fluid restriction, Gas and bloating, and decreased physical ability. The study recommended the development of educational programs to improve the quality of life of dialysis patients in the final stages of the disease, based on the interests and needs of the patients, rather than on the considerations of healthcare providers.
