Abstract

Social phobia is a common psychological disorder among university students, significantly affecting their self-esteem. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social phobia and self-esteem among the students of the Faculty of Nursing. Using a descriptive correlational approach, data were collected from 200 male and female nursing students at Latakia University using a two-scale instrument: a social phobia scale and a self-esteem scale. The results showed that the majority of participants were female, aged 21-25, single, residing in the city, and of average economic status. The findings also revealed that less than half of the sample (45%) suffered from severe social phobia, while more than three-quarters (79%) had moderate self-esteem. A moderately strong, statistically significant inverse relationship was found between the level of social phobia and self-esteem; that is, the higher the level of social phobia, the lower the self-esteem. The study recommends conducting workshops and lectures on managing anxiety and social phobia, as well as providing psychological counseling sessions for university students.
