Nursing is a key member of the healthcare team and plays an important and influential role in the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare services provided in hospitals, and nursing care provided by nursing staff represents the other side and complement to medical services. The concept of workload is widely used in nursing and refers to the amount of time and care that nursing staff can devote (directly and indirectly) to patients, the workplace, and professional development. The aim of this study is to assess the daily nursing workload of nursing staff working in the care departments of Latakia University Hospital (General Intensive Care, Coronary Intensive Care, and Pediatric Intensive care). The study sample included all nursing staff in these departments (134 nurses). Four tools were used in the study: demographic and clinical data, direct nursing activities, indirect nursing activities, and support activities. The researcher concluded that the nursing workload is high in the general intensive care department and is directly affected by the daily statistics of patients admitted to the department. The researcher recommended restructuring and redistributing nursing staff in proportion to the workload and assigning some of the support activities in the department to non-nursing staff in order to reduce the high levels of nursing workload.
