Abstract

Background:  The incidence of cesarean section(CS) is increasing globally.

Aim: The aim of this study was to detect the effect of  mechanical dilation of the uterine cervix during selective CS on the rate of postoperative blood loss.

Materials and Methods: the study included of 100 primigravida pregnant women at full-term meeting inclusion criteria, admitted at the department of obstetrics and gynecology , Lattakia University Hospital, during period(2023-2025) who underwent selective CS. Women were divided into two groups according to performing cervical dilation(50 cases in each group), in which demographic characteristics and final outcome were compared between two groups.

Results: Postoperative blood loss ranged from 50 to 700 ml(average:397.6±147.01) in cervical dilation group versus 150 to 900 ml(average:556.6±170.6) in other group,p:0..0001. In addition to, decrease in hemoglobin was significantly lower in cervical dilation group than other group(-1.03±0.2  vs. -1.17±0.6 ,p:0.01)

Conclusion: The current study revealed that mechanical uterine cervix dilation during selective CS represents an effective preventive method to reduce blood loss after delivery thereby improving final outcome.
