Abstract

This study aimed to identify the extent of application of modern performance evaluation methods by heads of nursing departments at the University Hospital in Lattakia. This is to find out the methods used to evaluate nurses’ performance, and whether we can follow an objective evaluation mechanism that is free from personal bias and common evaluation errors and satisfies the nursing staff and those conducting the evaluation. The descriptive analytical approach was adopted, and a tool developed by the researcher was used in the research to collect data. The sample included 45 heads of nursing departments who were currently working at the University Hospital in Lattakia.Data were collected using a tool developed by the researcher. The overall results of the study showed that department heads were unable to apply modern performance appraisal methods (360-degree method, 720-degree method, critical incident method, essay method, graphic progression method). Furthermore, only a small percentage were able to apply the ministry's approved evaluation questionnaire and interpret the survey scores.
