Abstract

This study was conducted in the Al-Haffah area, Lattakia governorate, during 2024, with the aim of comparing some of the chemical properties of charcoal produced from pruning residues of Palestine oak (Quercus calliprinus) using two methods: the double barrels and the traditional method (earth-mound kiln).

The results indicated that the barrel-produced charcoal was significantly superior with a lower average moisture content (4.43%) and ash content (4.16%) compared to a higher average moisture content (4.9%) and ash content (4.74%) in the mound-produced charcoal. Meanwhile, the barrel-produced charcoal was significantly superior with a higher average volatile matter content (10.54%) compared to a lower percentage (9.54%) in the mound-produced charcoal. The differences in fixed carbon content were not significant between the charcoal produced by both methods, as its average percentage was 81.62% in the barrel method and 81.29% in the mound method. We conclude that the double-barrel method is superior to the traditional method in producing Palestine oak charcoal in terms of yield, energy efficiency, and production speed.
